Wyoming’s Joint Judiciary Interim Committee approved proposed FixNICS legislation that would mandate the state to share mentally disqualifying records with the FBI to ensure those prohibited from possessing firearms are flagged in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). NSSF’s Nephi Cole, Director, Government Relations–State Affairs, worked with the legislature to propose language mandating that a court hearing for a petition to reinstate gun rights would remain private. “If we’re going to run a background check on you, our dealers want it to work,” Cole told reporters. “That, to us, is what this is about.” The FixNICS legislation has the support of the Wyoming Association of Sheriffs and Chiefs of Police. NSSF will continue to update with developments.
